Where is Sumer?

Sumer was a land way, way back in time, in a place called Mesopotamia. Think of it like a giant, flat playground nestled between two big rivers, the Tigris and the Euphrates. These rivers were super important because they brought water for drinking and for growing yummy food. The land was mostly flat and warm, perfect for building houses and farms. It’s in the country we now call Iraq!

Building Super Cities!

The people of Sumer were amazing builders! They didn't just build small houses; they built huge cities, like Uruk and Ur. These cities were bigger than any playground you've ever seen!

They used mud bricks, baked hard in the sun, to build strong walls and tall buildings called ziggurats, which were like giant staircases reaching for the sky. They even invented the wheel, which made moving heavy things much easier!

Smarty Pants Inventors!

Sumerians were super smart! They invented one of the most important things ever: writing! They used a special pointy stick to make marks on wet clay tablets, telling stories and keeping track of things. They also invented the wheel, which changed how people moved things forever. Imagine trying to move your toys without wheels! They were also great at math and knew a lot about the stars.

What Did They Do All Day?

Most people in Sumer were farmers, growing barley and dates. Others were craftspeople, making pottery, jewelry, and tools. Some people were traders, swapping goods with faraway lands. They loved music and played instruments like harps. They also had kings and priests who helped run the cities and made sure everyone followed the rules. It was a busy, exciting place to live!
