Meet the Ancient Armored Fish!

Imagine a fish that looks like it's wearing armor! That's a sturgeon. They have five rows of big, bony plates called scutes all over their bodies, like a knight's suit of armor.

These fish are super old, with fossils found from a time when dinosaurs still roamed the Earth! They can grow to be as long as a school bus, and some even weigh as much as a small car. They are bottom feeders, using their special mouths to slurp up yummy snacks from the riverbed.

Where Do These Giants Live?

Sturgeons are travelers! They like to live in rivers, lakes, and even the salty ocean along the coasts of Europe, Asia, and North America. Some sturgeons love to swim upstream in rivers to lay their eggs, like a big family road trip.

Others spend most of their time in the ocean, but they always come back to freshwater rivers to have babies. They can be found in places that are cool, like sub-Arctic rivers, or warmer, like subtropical coastlines.

Sturgeon Superpowers!

Sturgeons have some amazing features. Their tails look a bit like a shark's tail, which helps them swim. They don't have scales like most fish; instead, they have that tough, bony armor. They also have special feelers, called barbels, near their mouths that help them find food in murky water, even when they can't see it. It's like having a superpower for finding snacks in the dark!

Why We Need to Help Sturgeons

Sadly, sturgeons are in trouble. People have hunted them a lot because their eggs are used to make a fancy food called caviar. This has made many kinds of sturgeon very rare, and some are even close to disappearing forever. It's important to protect these ancient fish so they can keep swimming in our rivers and oceans for a long, long time.
