Key Facts
Where is the Big White North?
The Arctic is like a giant white hat on top of our planet Earth, right around the North Pole! It's so far north that it's mostly covered in snow and ice, even in the summer. Think of it as a huge, cold playground that includes parts of countries like Russia, Canada, Alaska (which is part of the USA), Greenland, and even tiny bits of Europe.
The main part is the Arctic Ocean, which is often frozen over!
What's it Like in the Arctic?
It's super cold there, and the ground is often frozen solid, like a giant popsicle! This frozen ground is called permafrost. In many places, there aren't many trees, but you'll find lots of low-growing plants and mosses called tundra. The land and the sea ice change a lot with the seasons. In winter, it's dark for a long time, and in summer, the sun shines almost all day and night!
Who Lives in this Icy Land?
Even though it's cold, amazing animals call the Arctic home! You might see fluffy polar bears hunting for seals, speedy arctic foxes with their white fur, and big walruses with long tusks. There are also lots of birds and fish. People have lived in the Arctic for a very, very long time too. They are called Indigenous peoples and have special ways of living and surviving in this unique place.
Arctic Adventures!
The Arctic is a special place with unique challenges. The people who live there have learned to adapt to the cold and find clever ways to build homes and find food. They have amazing stories and traditions passed down through generations. It's a place that reminds us how life can thrive even in the most extreme conditions on Earth!
