The Ohio River: A Giant Waterway!

Imagine a giant blue ribbon stretching across the United States! That's kind of like the Ohio River. It starts way up in a city called Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and flows all the way to another big river called the Mississippi River.

It’s so long, it’s like driving from New York City to Miami, Florida, and then some! This river is a border for six states, like a fence made of water, and its watery backyard reaches into 14 states. It’s a super important place for nature and people.

Did you know the Ohio River has a secret name? The Seneca people, who lived there a long time ago, called it 'Ohi:yo', which means 'Good River'. And guess what?

Thomas Jefferson, a very famous president, thought it was the most beautiful river ever! He said it was smooth and clear, with hardly any rocks. While it’s mostly smooth, there used to be a bumpy part called the 'Falls of the Ohio' that made it tricky for boats, like a little waterfall on a waterslide.

But clever people built a special canal to help boats get past!

It’s a very important source of fresh water for millions of people. Even though it’s a 'Good River', sometimes it can get a little bit dirty from things on land, so people work hard to keep it clean for everyone and everything that lives there.
