Where is Mississippi?

Imagine a big state in the United States shaped like a puzzle piece! Mississippi is in the southeastern part, like a warm hug from the country. It has a long western edge that follows the super-duper long Mississippi River.

To the south, it tickles the Gulf of Mexico, which is like a giant, salty bathtub. It also has neighbors named Tennessee, Alabama, Louisiana, and Arkansas. It's not the biggest state, but it's full of interesting places and things to see!

A Long, Long Time Ago!

People have lived in Mississippi for thousands and thousands of years! Long before cars or houses, ancient people called Paleo-Indians arrived. Later, amazing builders created huge mounds, like giant hills made of earth, for special reasons.

Then came explorers from far away, like the Spanish and French, who wanted to see what this land was like. Mississippi became a state a very long time ago, in 1817, which is even before your grandparents' grandparents were born!

Yummy Food and Cool Music!

Did you know Mississippi is famous for its delicious catfish? They raise more farm-raised catfish than almost anywhere else in the whole country! That's a lot of fish!

Mississippi is also the birthplace of the blues, a type of music that makes you want to tap your feet and sing along. Many famous musicians got their start here, sharing their amazing sounds with the world. It's a place with a lot of flavor, both in its food and its music!

What Do People Do There?

People in Mississippi work in many different jobs. Some people grow crops like cotton and sweet potatoes, and of course, raise that yummy catfish! Others work in factories making things, or help people with transportation and health services.

Many people also visit Mississippi because it has fun casinos and cool places from history. It's a state where people work hard and have lots of different ways to make a living.
