Key Facts
What Are These Treaties?
The Numbered Treaties are like special agreements, or promises, made a long, long time ago between the First Nations people and the King or Queen of Canada. There were eleven of them, signed between 1871 and 1921. These treaties helped Canada grow bigger by allowing people to settle on and use the land.
In return, the First Nations people were promised things. Think of it like sharing your toys, but with land and promises!
When Did They Happen?
These big promises happened in two main groups. The first group, Treaties 1 to 7, were signed super fast between 1871 and 1877. This was when lots of people started moving to places like the Prairies, and they even built a big train track called the Canadian Pacific Railway!
The second group, Treaties 8 to 11, were signed later, from 1899 to 1921. This time, people were more interested in finding cool stuff like minerals and oil in the ground.
Why Are They Important?
These treaties are super important because they are still part of Canada today! They helped shape where Canada is and who lives there. The promises made in these treaties are still being talked about.
It’s like a promise you make to a friend – you want to keep it! Canada's government still has to remember and follow these old promises, and sometimes people have to go to court to make sure they are kept.
What Did People Get?
Each treaty was a little different, like how each friend might want a different toy. The First Nations people agreed to share their land so others could live and build things there. In exchange, they were promised things like money, supplies, and sometimes even their own special areas of land called reserves.
The government also promised to help with things like schools and healthcare. It was a big deal for everyone involved!
