Where is Nippur?

Nippur was a very, very old city in a place called Sumer, which is now the country of Iraq. It was about as far from Baghdad as a long car ride to visit grandma! It sat near a river, which was like a superhighway for boats carrying goods. The land around it was probably flat and warm, perfect for growing yummy food.

A City for a Sky God!

Nippur was super special because it was the favorite home of a powerful god named Enlil. He was like the 'Lord Wind' and the boss of the sky and the whole world! People built a giant temple for him there. Imagine building the biggest, most amazing treehouse ever, but for a god!

Who Lived There?

People lived in Nippur for thousands and thousands of years, even before your grandparents' grandparents were born! They were called Sumerians. They built houses, farmed the land, and traded with other cities. It was a busy place, full of people working and playing.

What Did They Do?

The people of Nippur were busy! They grew crops like barley and wheat, which they used to make bread and beer. They also made beautiful pottery and tools. Since it was near a river, they used boats to trade with other towns, sending their goods and bringing back things they needed. It was like a bustling marketplace!
