Key Facts
Where the River Begins Its Big Adventure!
Imagine a lake so special it's the very start of one of the longest rivers in the world! That's Lake Itasca! It's not a super-duper giant lake, but it's about the size of 470 football fields. It sits in a beautiful park called Itasca State Park in Minnesota. This lake is like a tiny baby that grows up to be a huge river explorer, traveling thousands of miles!
A Name with a Secret Story!
This lake has had different names! The Ojibwe people, who lived there a long, long time ago, called it Omashkoozo-zaaga'igan, which means Elk Lake. Then, explorers came and called it Lac Labiche, which means Doe Lake.
Later, a man named Henry Schoolcraft thought it was a great idea to give it a new name. He mixed Latin words to make 'Itasca,' meaning 'true head' of the Mississippi River. It's like giving the lake a special nickname!
Water's First Steps!
Lake Itasca is like a water playground that's about 1,475 feet high, which is taller than many tall buildings! The water here is usually between 20 to 35 feet deep. That's about as deep as a two-story house is tall!
It's a glacial lake, which means it was made a super long time ago by giant, moving ice. This special water is the very first drop that starts the Mississippi River on its long journey south.
Fun Facts About the River's Start!
Did you know that Lake Itasca is the boss of the Mississippi River? It's the headwater! This means all the water from the lake has to flow out and start the river. The lake is part of Itasca State Park, a place where you can see amazing nature. It's a peaceful spot where the biggest river in America takes its very first, tiny steps into the world.
