Manifest Destiny

Key Facts
What's This Big Idea?
Manifest Destiny was a super popular idea in America a long, long time ago. It was like a belief that the United States was meant to grow and stretch all the way from the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific Ocean. People thought it was their special job, like a destiny, to move west and make new homes and towns.
They believed this was supposed to happen and that they were supposed to bring their way of life to new places.
Who Came Up With It?
This idea got really popular in the 1840s. A newspaper writer named John O'Sullivan used the words 'Manifest Destiny' to explain why Americans should take over new lands. He wrote that it was America's 'manifest destiny' to spread out.
Many people agreed with him and felt it was their duty to expand the country. They thought it was a good thing to do for everyone, even though it meant moving into lands already lived in by others.
Why Did They Want More Land?
People wanted to move west for lots of reasons. Some were looking for new farms and land to grow crops. Others were excited about finding gold and other treasures. There were also people who wanted to spread their religion and their government. They believed their way of living was the best and wanted everyone to have it. This big push westward changed the map of America forever.
What Happened Next?
Because of Manifest Destiny, the United States grew much, much bigger. They bought land, signed treaties, and sometimes even fought wars to get more territory. This expansion led to new states being added to the country. It also meant that Native American tribes had to move from their homes. It was a time of big changes and big adventures for many Americans heading west.
