What is Korea?

Korea is a special place in East Asia shaped like a long finger pointing down from the big continent. It's a peninsula, which means it's surrounded by water on three sides, like a giant playground with oceans for fences! Today, Korea is split into two countries: North Korea and South Korea.

They used to be one big country, but after a big war, they became separate. It's a land with a super long history, full of kings, queens, and brave people.

A Land of Ancient Kingdoms!

Korea has been home to people for thousands and thousands of years! Long ago, it was divided into different kingdoms, like a game of tag with three teams: Goguryeo, Baekje, and Silla. The Silla kingdom eventually became the strongest and joined with another kingdom called Balhae to make a bigger, unified Korea.

Later, a kingdom called Goryeo rose up and was so important that its name is where we get the word 'Korea' today! They even invented the first printing press with metal letters!

Cool Inventions and Kings!

After Goryeo, a new dynasty called Joseon took over. For a long time, it was a peaceful period where they created their own special alphabet, called Hangul. It’s super easy to learn, unlike some other alphabets!

But then, invaders came, and Korea had to become very strong and sometimes kept to itself. Later, during the Joseon dynasty, Korea became an empire, and its last king became an emperor. It was a time of big changes and sometimes difficult times.

Two Koreas Today!

After World War II, Korea was divided by two big countries, the United States and the Soviet Union. This led to the Korean War, which was very sad and left the two Koreas, North Korea and South Korea, separate. Today, South Korea is known for its awesome music and movies that people all over the world love, like K-pop!

North Korea has a very strong military. They are two very different countries now, but they both share the same ancient history and land.
