A Land Divided!

Once upon a time, Korea was one country. But after a big world war, it got split into two parts: North Korea and South Korea. They had different ideas about how to run their country. In 1950, North Korea, with help from other countries, decided to try and make all of Korea one country under their rule. This started a big, sad fight called the Korean War.

Who Was Fighting?

It was like a giant game of tug-of-war! North Korea and its friends, like China, fought against South Korea and its friends, like the United States and many other countries from the United Nations. The soldiers were brave and far from home. They fought in tough places, like snowy mountains and muddy fields. It was a very difficult time for everyone involved.

A War That Never Really Ended?

The fighting lasted for three long years, from 1950 to 1953. Many people were hurt, and lots of homes were destroyed. Finally, the two sides agreed to stop fighting, but they didn't sign a peace treaty. This means that technically, North Korea and South Korea are still at war today, even though the fighting stopped! They live on opposite sides of a very guarded border.

Why We Remember This War

The Korean War showed how countries can help each other. It also showed how sad and difficult wars can be. Even though the fighting stopped, Korea is still two different countries today. It's important to learn about this war so we can understand how countries can be divided and why peace is so important for everyone.
