Meet Jacques, the Explorer!

Jacques Cartier was a brave explorer from a country called France, way back in the year 1491. He loved sailing on big ships across the ocean. His job was to find new places for his king.

He was like a super-detective, but instead of looking for clues on land, he looked for new lands on the sea! He sailed to a place that is now called Canada, and he was the very first European to see and draw maps of a giant river and a big bay.

Discovering 'Canada'!

When Jacques sailed up a huge river, he saw two big villages. The people there called their land 'Canada'! Jacques thought this was a great name for the whole area.

So, he named the big bay he found the Gulf of Saint Lawrence and the river the Saint Lawrence River. He was like a cartographer, which is someone who draws maps. He drew maps of places no European had ever seen before, showing everyone what this new land looked like.

What Did He Find?

Jacques Cartier explored a place that is now Canada. He was the first European to describe and map the Gulf of Saint Lawrence and the Saint Lawrence River. He saw two big settlements, one called Stadacona (which is now Quebec City) and another called Hochelaga (on Montreal Island).

He wrote down everything he saw, like a travel diary for his king. His maps helped other explorers know where to go next.

Why We Remember Jacques

Jacques Cartier is super important because he was one of the first Europeans to explore and map a huge part of North America. His discoveries helped France learn about this new land. Even though he didn't find gold like some other explorers, he found something just as valuable: a whole new territory to explore and understand. His name is remembered on maps and in history books today!
