Key Facts
Where is This Awesome Island?
Iceland is a big island way up north, floating between two giant oceans: the Arctic Ocean and the North Atlantic Ocean. It's like a secret hideout between Europe and North America. Even though it's far north, a warm ocean current called the Gulf Stream keeps it from getting too, too cold. So, it's a land of amazing contrasts, with icy glaciers and hot springs!
A Land Made by Fire and Ice!
This island is super special because it sits right on top of where two giant pieces of the Earth's crust are pulling apart! This means Iceland has lots of volcanoes that can erupt and geysers that shoot hot water high into the air, like nature's own water fountains. It also has huge, sparkling glaciers that are like frozen rivers, covering a big part of the land.
Who Lives in Iceland?
Only about 390,000 people live in Iceland, which is less than the number of people in many big cities! The capital city is called Reykjavík, and it's where most people live. The people of Iceland speak a language called Icelandic, which sounds a bit like old Viking languages. They are known for being very friendly and creative.
What Do Icelanders Do?
Many people in Iceland work with the sea, like fishing, because it's an island! They also use the hot water from the ground to make electricity and heat their homes, which is super smart. Icelanders also love learning, and they have a special parliament that's been around for a very, very long time, making it one of the oldest in the world!
