Hetch Hetchy

Hetch Hetchy is a super special place tucked away in Yosemite National Park, like a secret garden! It’s a beautiful valley where a river used to flow freely. Now, a giant wall called a dam holds back the water, making a huge lake called a reservoir.

This lake is so big, it’s like a giant bathtub for the mountains! The land around it is full of tall trees and rocky cliffs, just like the rest of Yosemite.

People have lived in Hetch Hetchy for thousands of years! Native American tribes used to hunt and gather food here. Later, people from far away came and thought the valley was as pretty as Yosemite Valley. But they also wanted to use the water for towns and farms. It took a long time and a lot of talking to decide what to do with this amazing place.

Guess what? The water from Hetch Hetchy travels a super long way, like a journey across many towns, to reach San Francisco! A big dam was built, called the O’Shaughnessy Dam, and it made the giant reservoir. This water is super important for people living in San Francisco and nearby cities. It’s like the valley is sharing its water with them!
