Dam

Imagine a super-duper big wall built across a river. That's a dam! It's made of strong stuff like concrete or rocks. Dams are like giant bathtubs for rivers, holding back lots of water. Sometimes they are as tall as a 10-story building! People build them to control where the water goes and to keep it safe.

People have been building dams for a very, very long time. The first ones were made thousands of years ago, even before cars or phones! Ancient people used rocks and mud to make small dams to help water their farms. Over time, people got better at building them, making them bigger and stronger to hold back more water.

Dams are super helpful! They can store water for when we need it, like for drinking or watering plants when it's dry. They can also make electricity, like a giant power plant! Plus, they help stop floods from happening, which keeps towns and homes safe from too much water.

Dams work by blocking the flow of a river. When the water hits the dam, it piles up behind it, making a big lake called a reservoir. Sometimes, there are special doors called gates that can be opened to let some water through. This controlled water can spin giant wheels called turbines to make electricity!
