Key Facts
Meet the Mighty Fort!
Fort Amsterdam was like a big, strong hug for the very first part of New York City. It sat right where two rivers meet, like a guard watching over the water. This fort was the main office and marketplace for people who lived there a long, long time ago. It was the heart of a place called New Amsterdam, which later grew into the amazing New York City we know today!
A Castle That Changed Hands!
This fort had many names over the years, like a chameleon changing its colors! It was called Fort James, Fort Anne, and Fort George. It even changed owners eight times! Imagine playing a game where you have to give your toy to someone else eight times. That's kind of what happened to Fort Amsterdam during different battles and agreements.
Why Was It So Special?
Fort Amsterdam was super important because it was the center of everything for the early settlers. It was where important decisions were made and where people traded goods. It was even the spot where someone officially bought the whole island of Manhattan! Think of it as the first town hall and main street all rolled into one.
From Fort to Fun Park!
After many years of being a strong fort, it was finally taken down. But don't worry, the spot didn't stay empty! A big house was built there, and now it's a museum where you can see cool Native American artifacts. Plus, the cannons that used to guard the fort gave their name to a famous place nearby called Battery Park!
