Key Facts
Welcome to New Amsterdam!
Once upon a time, way back in the 1600s, people from a country called the Netherlands sailed across the ocean. They found a beautiful island called Manhattan and decided to build a new home there! They called their little settlement New Amsterdam.
It was like building a new playground, but with houses and shops instead of swings and slides. This new town was at the very bottom of Manhattan Island, right where the water was perfect for ships to visit.
Building a Fort and a Town
The first thing the Dutch people did was build a fort, like a strong castle, called Fort Amsterdam. This fort was super important because it helped protect their business of trading animal furs. They wanted to make sure no one took their valuable furs!
Around this fort, more and more houses and buildings popped up. Soon, it wasn't just a fort anymore, but a real town where people lived, worked, and played. It became the capital, like the main office, for all the Dutch lands in the area.
Growing Like a Popcorn Kernel!
New Amsterdam started small, but it grew really fast! In just a few years, more and more people came to live there. By 1655, over 1,500 people called New Amsterdam home, which is more people than can fit in a big school bus!
Later, even more people arrived, and the town became a busy city in 1653. It was a place where people from different backgrounds lived together, making it a lively and interesting community.
A New Name for a New Home
One day, people from England arrived and took over New Amsterdam. They decided to give it a brand new name: New York! This is the same name the big city has today.
Even though the name changed, the place where New Amsterdam once stood is still there, at the southern tip of Manhattan Island. It’s amazing to think that the busy streets and tall buildings of modern New York City grew from that small Dutch settlement!
