Australia's Big Family Reunion!

Once upon a time, Australia wasn't one country. It was like six different playgrounds, each with its own rules: New South Wales, Queensland, South Australia, Tasmania, Victoria, and Western Australia. They were like six friends who decided to play together and form one giant, super-fun team!

This big get-together is called Federation. It was like everyone agreeing to share their toys and build one amazing castle together. Even though Fiji and New Zealand were invited, they decided to play in their own yards instead.

But the other six were ready for their big reunion!

Who Helped Make Australia One?

Making friends can be tricky, and making a country is even trickier! Some grown-ups really wanted Australia to be one big country. A very important person named Sir Henry Parkes was like the super-planner for this big reunion.

He helped everyone talk and decide on the rules for their new country. After lots of meetings, they wrote down all the rules in a special book called the Constitution. On January 1, 1901, it was official!

The six playgrounds became six states in one big country called the Commonwealth of Australia. Sir Edmund Barton became the first leader of this new country!

Australia's New Rules!

When Australia became one country, it was like moving into a new house. The six old playgrounds (now called states) kept their own rooms and their own ways of playing, like having their own school rules. But they also got a new, big living room for the whole country!

This is where the federal government comes in. They make rules for everyone, like making sure all the playgrounds have swings and slides, and that everyone plays fair. So, each state still has its own special things, but they all work together as one big Australian family.

Cool Houses from Federation Times!

Did you know that when Australia became one country, it even inspired a special way of building houses? It's called Federation architecture! These houses often have pretty porches, fancy windows, and sometimes even cool little towers.

They look a bit like they belong in a storybook! So, not only did the grown-ups create a new country, but they also created a whole new style of building that you can still see in Australia today. It’s like a lasting reminder of when Australia decided to become one big, happy nation.
