Three Gorges Dam
Key Facts
Meet the Giant Wall!
The Three Gorges Dam is a humongous wall built across a super long river called the Yangtze River in China. It's so big, it's like building a wall taller than 60 giraffes stacked on top of each other! This giant wall has a very important job: to control the river's water.
It helps stop floods from happening and also makes electricity for millions of homes. It's one of the biggest buildings ever made by people!
Why Build Such a Big Wall?
For a very, very long time, the Yangtze River would flood and cause a lot of trouble for people living nearby. The water would wash away homes and farms. So, people decided to build this giant dam to tame the wild river. It took many years to build, starting way back in 1994 and finishing in 2006. It was a massive project, like building a whole new town just for the workers!
Superpowers of the Dam!
The Three Gorges Dam has amazing superpowers! First, it's a flood fighter. By holding back lots of water, it stops the river from overflowing and flooding villages.
Second, it's an electricity maker! The water rushing through the dam spins giant machines called turbines, which create tons of clean electricity. This electricity powers lights, TVs, and computers for people all over China.
It's like a giant power plant!
A River Changed Forever
Building the dam changed the river and the land around it a lot. A huge lake, called a reservoir, formed behind the dam, which is bigger than many small countries! This meant some towns and villages had to be moved. But the dam also made it easier for big boats to travel on the river, helping people trade and move things around. It's a big change for a big river!
