Meet the Giant Watery Playground!

James Bay is a super big, U-shaped body of water in Canada. It's like a giant bathtub for the country! It sits at the bottom of an even bigger bay called Hudson Bay. Two big Canadian places, Quebec and Ontario, have their edges touching this bay. It's so wide that it's hard to see the other side! Sometimes, it's so cold that the water turns into ice, like a giant skating rink!

Where the Water Gets Dirty (Sometimes!)

The Cree people, who have lived here for a very, very long time, call James Bay 'Wînipekw,' which means 'dirty water.' This is because lots of rivers flow into it, carrying mud and other things. These rivers are super important because they bring fresh water. But guess what? Some of these rivers have been changed with big dams to make electricity, which is like magic power for our homes!

Island Adventures and Icy Winters

Did you know there's a giant island in James Bay called Akimiski Island? It's like a big floating piece of land in the bay! In the winter, James Bay gets very cold, and much of it freezes over. It's one of the last places in the huge Hudson Bay to freeze and the first to melt when spring arrives. Imagine playing on a giant ice slide that covers the whole bay!

People and Homes by the Bay

Lots of people live near James Bay. Some of them are Indigenous Canadians, like the Cree and the Kashechewan First Nation. They have lived in this area for thousands of years and know all its secrets. They live in towns and villages right by the water. It's a special place where nature and people live together, sharing the land and the water.
