Where is This Giant Land?

The Congo Free State was a super big place in the middle of Africa. It was so huge, it's like having many countries all squished together! It had amazing rivers, like the Congo River, which is one of the longest in the world, longer than from New York to Los Angeles! This land was full of green forests and lots of animals.

A King's Special Place

A long, long time ago, a king named Leopold II from a country called Belgium owned this giant land. He called it his 'Free State.' It was like he owned a giant playground, but instead of swings and slides, it had rubber trees and diamonds! People who lived there were made to work for the king.

What Was It Like Back Then?

This land was full of amazing things like rubber, which was very valuable. People had to collect it from trees. It was also home to many different groups of people, each with their own languages and ways of life. The Congo River was like a superhighway for boats to travel and carry things.

A Story of Change

The Congo Free State wasn't a happy place for everyone. Because of how people were treated, the world found out and said it had to change. Eventually, it stopped being the king's personal place and became a different kind of place called the Belgian Congo, and later, the country we know as the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
