Copper

Imagine a metal that's soft enough to bend and shiny enough to see your face in! That's copper. Pure copper has a beautiful pinkish-orange color, like a sunset. It's also super good at letting heat and electricity zoom through it, which is why it's used in so many things we use every day. Think of the wires inside your toys or the toaster that makes your breakfast warm!

People have known about copper for a VERY long time, even before they knew how to make iron! They found it lying around in nature, ready to be used. That's how old it is! Later, people figured out how to melt it from rocks and even mix it with other metals to make even stronger stuff, like bronze. Bronze is so old, we even have an 'Age' named after it!

Copper is like a superhero for our bodies! Even though it's a metal, we need a tiny bit of it to stay healthy. It helps our bodies use oxygen, which is what we breathe. It's also used in special tools that help doctors measure how hot or cold things are. And guess what? Some copper compounds can even help keep yucky germs away!

Copper is hiding in plain sight! It's used to make the wires that bring electricity to our homes and power our video games. It's also used in buildings, especially for roofs. When copper gets old on a roof, it turns a cool green color, like a statue! This green stuff is called patina, and it actually protects the metal underneath.
