What's a Colony Anyway?

A colony is like a place that's owned by another country, far away. The people who live there are ruled by the faraway country, called the 'mother country'. It's like having a teacher from a different school come to your classroom and tell you what to do.

The mother country often sent its own people to live in the colony and make decisions. This was a way for powerful countries to get bigger and control more land.

Olden Days Adventures!

People have been making colonies for a super long time! The ancient Romans had places called 'colonia' which were like new towns for farmers and settlers. The ancient Greeks also had 'apoikia', which were like homes away from home across the sea.

Later, from about 500 years ago, big European countries started making lots of colonies all over the world, like setting up new forts in a giant game of tag.

Why Did They Do It?

Countries made colonies for many reasons. Sometimes, they wanted to find new things to trade, like spices or shiny metals. Other times, they wanted to send their own people to live in a new place. The main idea was often to get more power and resources for the mother country. It was like collecting more toys than your friends to feel like the winner.

Making the Rules

In a colony, the faraway mother country made the rules. They often took the things the colony had, like valuable resources, and sent them back home. The people who lived in the colony might not have had a say in how things were run. It was a system where one country was in charge and the other followed, sometimes without much choice.
