Tiny Countries, Big Cities!

A city-state is like a country that's also a city! It's not like other countries that have a capital city and lots of towns and countryside. Instead, the whole country is just one main city and the land right around it. Think of it like your whole school being its own little country. It has its own rules and leaders, just like a real country, but it's all packed into one place!

Olden Days Superstars!

Long, long ago, many famous places were city-states. Cities like Athens and Sparta in ancient Greece were city-states. Rome, which became a huge empire, started as a city-state! Later, in places like Italy, cities like Venice and Florence were powerful city-states. They were like the biggest, most important cities in their areas, and they made their own decisions.

Who Lives There?

Today, there are only a few places that are truly city-states. Singapore is one of them! It's a very busy city that is also a country. Monaco is another tiny city-state, famous for its fancy cars and casinos. Vatican City is the smallest city-state in the world, and it's where the Pope lives! These places are small but have their own governments and make their own rules.

What Do They Do?

City-states are often very busy with trade and business because they are usually located in good spots for ships to visit. People in city-states work in all sorts of jobs, from running shops to building things. Because they are small, everyone knows each other a bit better, and the city is the center of everything for the people who live there.

It's like a giant neighborhood that's also a country!
