Battle of Marathon
Key Facts
Who Fought and Why?
Long, long ago, in ancient Greece, two big groups of people had a disagreement. The mighty Persian Empire, led by King Darius, wanted to rule over the Greek cities. But the Greeks, like the brave people of Athens, loved being free!
So, the Persians sent a giant army across the sea to Greece. The Athenians knew they had to defend their homes, even though they had fewer soldiers. It was like a small group of kids facing a much bigger class!
The Amazing Race to Victory!
The Persians landed their ships near a place called Marathon. The Athenian army rushed to meet them. They had a clever plan!
The Athenian soldiers spread out their lines to look like a much bigger army. Then, they charged! They ran super fast towards the Persians, shouting and waving their spears.
The Persians were surprised and a little scared by this sudden attack. The Athenians fought bravely and won the battle!
The Legend of the Speedy Runner!
After the battle, the Athenians needed to tell their friends in the city of Athens the good news. A soldier named Pheidippides ran all the way from Marathon to Athens โ that's about 25 miles, like running across your whole town and back, maybe twice! He shouted, 'We won!' and then, tired from his amazing run, he fell down. This is where the famous marathon race comes from today!
Why Marathon Matters Today
The Battle of Marathon was super important because it showed that even a smaller group could defeat a much larger one if they were brave and smart. It helped keep Greece free and allowed its amazing ideas about democracy and thinking to grow. Plus, it gave us the idea for the marathon race, which people all over the world run today to celebrate that incredible feat of running!
