Key Facts
When Cities Said 'No More!'
Long ago, some Greek cities in a land called Ionia were ruled by a faraway empire called Persia. The Persians picked leaders for these cities, and the people weren't happy! They wanted to choose their own leaders. So, in 499 BC, these cities decided they had enough and started a big rebellion, like a giant playground argument that turned into a real fight!
A Surprise Attack and a Big Chase!
One leader named Aristagoras got into trouble and decided to get all of Ionia to join him in fighting the Persians. They even got help from other Greek cities, like Athens! They marched and even burned down a Persian city called Sardis. But on their way back, the Persians chased them and won a big battle. The Ionians had to be careful after that.
The Big Sea Battle
The Persians were very angry and sent lots of soldiers and ships. The Ionians tried to fight them in a huge sea battle near an island called Lade. It was like a giant game of tag on the water! But some of the Ionian ships got scared and sailed away, and the Persians won. This made it very hard for the Greek cities to win their freedom.
Did They Win Freedom?
After the big sea battle, the Persians captured the main city of Miletus. The revolt was mostly over. The Persians spent some time making sure all the cities were back under their rule. They eventually made new rules that were fair, but the Greek cities didn't get their full freedom back from Persia just yet. This fight was the start of even bigger wars!
