Why Were They Fighting?

Imagine a super important city, holy to many people. During a big war called World War I, two big groups, the British Empire and the Ottoman Empire, were fighting. The British wanted to capture Jerusalem, a city that was like a giant prize! They had already won other battles nearby, and taking Jerusalem was the next big goal in their plan to win the war in that part of the world.

The Big Push to the City!

The fighting to get to Jerusalem was tough! It happened in hills and around the city. The British soldiers had to be very clever and brave. They fought battles like the one at Nebi Samwill and then defended the city itself. It was like a giant game of chess, but with real soldiers! They finally got close enough to take control.

A Special Gift for Christmas!

Guess what? The British soldiers finally captured Jerusalem! The leader, General Allenby, walked into the city through a gate called Jaffa Gate. He walked instead of riding a horse to show how much he respected the holy city. The Prime Minister of Britain thought it was such a great victory that he called it a 'Christmas present' for everyone back home!

Who Were the Star Players?

The main heroes in this story were the soldiers from the British Empire. They had different groups of soldiers, like XX Corps, XXI Corps, and the Desert Mounted Corps, who worked together like a super team. They were up against the Ottoman Empire's armies. The leader of the British forces was General Edmund Allenby, who made the smart decisions to win the battle.
