Key Facts
Meet the Land Down Under!
Imagine a giant puzzle piece on our planet! That's the continent of Australia. It's in the Southern Hemisphere, which is like the bottom half of the Earth. It's made up of the big country of Australia, plus islands like New Guinea and Tasmania. It's surrounded by big blue oceans. Even though it's the smallest continent, it's still super big, like a giant playground!
When the World Was Different!
A super long time ago, when it was very cold, the water in the oceans was frozen into ice. This made the sea levels lower, and the islands of New Guinea and Tasmania were connected to mainland Australia by dry land! This giant landmass was called Sahul. But as the Earth warmed up, the ice melted, and the water rose, splitting Sahul into the places we know today.
Dry and Sunny Adventures!
Australia is a very sunny place, and much of it is dry and warm, like a desert. It's the second driest continent after Antarctica! This means some parts don't get much rain. But don't worry, there are still amazing places with water, like the Great Barrier Reef, which is full of colorful fish. It's a land of sunshine and unique animals!
