Key Facts
Where in the World is This Place?
Papua New Guinea is a super cool country made up of the eastern half of a giant island called New Guinea, plus lots of smaller islands nearby! It's way up north of Australia, in a big blue ocean called the Pacific. Think of it like a giant puzzle piece in the ocean.
It shares its land with Indonesia on one side and has watery neighbors like Australia and the Solomon Islands. It's a big place, with mountains, forests, and beaches!
A Long, Long Time Ago...
Long ago, different countries, like Germany and Britain, wanted parts of this land. Later, Australia took care of it. During a big war called World War II, there was lots of fighting here.
But after the war, all the parts came together. In 1975, Papua New Guinea became its own independent country, like when you grow up and get to make your own choices! It's still connected to the King of England, but it runs itself.
So Many People, So Many Languages!
Guess what? Papua New Guinea has more languages spoken than anywhere else on Earth – over 840! That's like having a different language for every day of the year, and then some! Most people live in small villages surrounded by nature, not in big cities. They have amazing traditions and ways of life that are super important to them. It's a place bursting with different cultures and people.
Nature's Playground!
This country is like a giant nature park! It has huge mountains and thick forests that are home to about 5% of all the different kinds of animals and plants in the world. Many people here are farmers, growing their own food. They also use the natural resources from the land. It's a place where people and nature live very closely together, with beautiful and wild landscapes.
