Key Facts
Who Was William Penn?
Imagine a man who loved peace and wanted everyone to be treated fairly. That was William Penn! He was a writer and a Quaker, which meant he believed in being kind and honest.
He was given a huge piece of land by the King of England, and he decided to create a special place there. This place would be a home for people who wanted to live freely and believe what they wanted. He was like a friendly giant who built a new world!
A Land of His Own!
King Charles II gave William Penn a giant amount of land because he owed Penn's dad money. This land was so big, it's now two places: Pennsylvania and Delaware! William Penn sailed across the ocean and found a beautiful spot by a river. He named the city Philadelphia, which means 'city of brotherly love.' It was like starting a brand new playground where everyone could play together nicely.
Friends with Everyone!
William Penn was super good at making friends, even with the people who lived there first, the Lenape Native Americans. He made sure to talk to them and sign peaceful agreements, like shaking hands and promising to be good neighbors. This was very special because, back then, many people didn't get along. He wanted his new land to be a place of peace and fairness for all.
A Place for All Beliefs
William Penn wanted everyone to be able to believe in their own way without being scared. He created rules for his new land that protected people's right to choose their religion. This was a big deal! He also believed that everyone should have a say in how things were run. His ideas helped shape the way America is run today, making it a place where different people can live together.
