A Day Near Wounded Knee Creek

Once upon a time, a group of Lakota people were traveling and stopped near a place called Wounded Knee Creek. They were getting ready to make camp. But then, soldiers from the U.S. Army arrived. They wanted to take away the Lakota people's special rifles. This was a very important time, and things got very confusing and sad.

What Happened Next?

The soldiers surrounded the camp. They wanted to take the Lakota's guns. During this, a man named Black Coyote didn't want to give up his rifle. Suddenly, a shot went off! No one knows for sure who fired it first. But then, the soldiers started shooting, and many Lakota people were hurt or worse. It was a very frightening and tragic moment.

So Many People Lost

Sadly, almost 300 Lakota people lost their lives that day. Many of them were women and children. Twenty-five soldiers were also killed, and many more were hurt. It was a day of great sadness for everyone involved. This event happened a long, long time ago, on December 29, 1890.

Remembering What Happened

Even though it was a long time ago, people still remember Wounded Knee. It's important to learn about sad events so we can try to make sure they don't happen again. The place where it happened is now a special historical site. People want to remember the Lakota people and what they went through.
