Snow Bunting

Imagine a bird that’s smaller than your lunchbox! That’s the Snow Bunting. It’s a special bird that lives way up north in the Arctic, where it’s super cold and snowy.

It’s so good at living in the cold that it’s the most northerly bird in the whole world! It has fluffy feathers to keep it warm, like wearing a cozy sweater all the time. These birds are like little explorers, traveling to the very top of the world to make their homes.

Snow Buntings are Arctic specialists, which means they are experts at living in the freezing Arctic. They build their nests in rocky places and on the ground, often in snowy areas. You can find them flying all around the very top of the Earth, in places like Canada, Russia, and Greenland.

Sometimes, they even visit chilly mountain tops far away from the Arctic, like in Scotland! They are true travelers of the cold.

Even though they are small, Snow Buntings are busy eaters! Their favorite foods are tiny seeds from plants that grow in the cold, snowy places they call home. They also love to gobble up small insects and bugs when they can find them. They use their beaks to peck at the ground and find these yummy snacks. Eating seeds and bugs helps them stay strong and warm in their chilly environment.

One of the coolest things about Snow Buntings is how they survive in the extreme cold. They have special fluffy feathers that trap air, acting like a warm blanket. They can also puff up their feathers to make themselves look bigger and even warmer!

When winter comes, they might fly south a little bit, but they always stay in cold places. They are amazing at finding food even when everything is covered in snow.
