Imagine a group of people who are super good at living high up in tall mountains! That’s the Quechua people. They are known for their amazing skills in farming on steep hillsides and building incredible places.

They speak a language called Quechua, which is like a secret code for their community. They have lived in the Andes Mountains for a very, very long time, making them some of the oldest communities in South America. They are like the superheroes of the mountains!

A long, long time ago, the Quechua people were part of a super-big empire called the Inca Empire. They were like the architects and builders of this empire! They built amazing stone cities, like Machu Picchu, that are still standing today.

These cities were built without any nails, just perfectly cut stones fitted together. They also created a huge network of roads, longer than the distance from New York to Los Angeles, to connect their empire. It’s like they built the first superhighway system in the mountains!

How do you grow food on super steep mountains? The Quechua people figured it out! They created special farming steps called terraces, which look like giant staircases on the sides of mountains.

This stopped the soil from washing away and gave them flat places to grow corn, potatoes, and quinoa. They even invented ways to store food so it wouldn't spoil, like freeze-drying potatoes! This meant they always had food, even when the weather was tough.

They are true masters of growing food in tricky places.

Even though the Inca Empire is gone, the Quechua people are still here! Millions of people today speak Quechua and live in the same mountainous regions. They continue to farm, weave beautiful textiles with colorful patterns, and share their traditions.
