Key Facts
Welcome to the End of the Earth!
Punta Arenas is a super cool city in Chile, way, way down south. It's like the capital of the very last bit of South America before you get to Antarctica! It's the biggest city you'll find south of a place called the 46th parallel south.
Think of it as a special marker on a map, and Punta Arenas is the largest town below it. It's also the most populated city at the very bottom of Chile and all of the Americas!
A City Born from a Big Idea!
Long ago, Chile wanted to make sure this important spot belonged to them. So, in 1848, they built a small town here, kind of like a special outpost. It was a place to keep people safe and show that Chile was in charge of the nearby Strait of Magellan.
Over time, more and more ships sailed past, and people from Europe came to find gold and work on huge sheep farms. This helped Punta Arenas grow bigger and bigger!
Why Punta Arenas is a Star!
This city is special because it's one of the most southerly ports in the whole world. That means big ships can stop here. It's also a gateway to Antarctica, a frozen continent! Because it's so far south, it's also the coldest coastal city with over 100,000 people in Latin America. It's like being the coolest kid in the coldest classroom!
Adventures and Amazing Facts!
Punta Arenas is famous for being a free port, which means it's a special place for trading. It's also known for its sheep farming history, with some companies owning land bigger than some countries! Even though another city, Ushuaia, is a little bit farther south, Punta Arenas is bigger. It's a busy place that helps people explore the very end of the world and even reach Antarctica!
