Vik Graveyard

Key Facts
Where Did the Vikings Live?
Long, long ago, in lands called Scandinavia, lived the Vikings! Think of places like Norway, Sweden, and Denmark. These lands have lots of cool nature, like big mountains and deep fjords, which are like long, skinny arms of the sea reaching inland.
The Vikings were amazing sailors, and their homes were often near the water, where they could build their famous ships. These places were cold and snowy in the winter, but beautiful and green in the summer.
Saying Goodbye to a Viking Hero!
When a Viking leader or important person died, they had a special send-off. It wasn't just a quick goodbye. Sometimes, they would put the person in a real boat, or even a boat made of stones!
This was like giving them a special vehicle for their journey to the afterlife. They would also add gifts, like tools, jewelry, or even things they used in their jobs. It was like packing a special suitcase for a very long trip!
Giant Piles of Rocks!
After the Viking was placed in their boat or grave, people would build a huge mound of stones and dirt on top. These mounds, called tumuli, could be as big as a small hill! Some were built for kings and were super impressive.
Imagine a pile of rocks taller than a house! These giant mounds were like giant signs saying, 'A great person is buried here.' They were a way to remember the person forever.
What Did They Leave Behind?
Archaeologists, who are like treasure hunters for history, have found many amazing things from Viking funerals. They find old swords, beautiful necklaces, and even the remains of ships! These discoveries help us understand how Vikings lived and what was important to them.
They show us that Vikings believed in an afterlife and wanted to make sure their loved ones had everything they needed for their journey. It's like finding a time capsule from the past!
