Meet the Nahuas!

Imagine a big family of people living in Mexico and other countries nearby. That's kind of like the Nahuas! They are one of the biggest groups of Indigenous people in Mexico.

They even have their own special language called Nahuatl. It's like a secret code that many people speak. Some Nahuas live in countries like El Salvador and Guatemala too.

They are a very important part of the history and culture of these places.

Where Did They Come From?

A long, long time ago, around the year 500, the Nahua people started moving into a place called central Mexico. They came from an area that is now part of Mexico and the United States. They settled down and became a very big and important group.

Over time, they spread out and became known in many different areas. It's like they were the popular kids on the playground, but in a good way, sharing their culture!

The Amazing Aztec Connection!

Did you know that the famous Aztecs were actually Nahuas? Wow! The Aztecs built amazing cities and were very powerful. The Nahuas also include other groups, like the Tlaxcallans, who were sometimes friends and sometimes enemies of the Aztecs. Even the Toltecs, who lived even earlier, might have been Nahuas too! This shows how many different groups of Nahuas there were, all with their own stories.

Talking in Nahuatl!

The Nahua language, Nahuatl, is super cool! About 1.5 million people still speak it today. That's a lot of people!

It's one of the most spoken Indigenous languages in the Americas. Imagine if everyone in your school spoke a special language only they understood. Nahuatl is like that, but for a whole community.

Sadly, in some places like El Salvador, there are only a few people left who speak a special version called Nawat.
