Monks Mound: The Giant Earth Hill!

Monks Mound is like a super-duper big hill made of dirt! It's the biggest man-made hill in all of North America. It's so huge, it's like stacking 100 school buses on top of each other! People called the Mississippians built it a very, very long time ago, between 900 and 955 AD. That's even older than castles in Europe! It's located in Illinois, USA, at a place called Cahokia Mounds.

This giant mound wasn't built with trucks or machines. Nope! People carried basket after basket of dirt and clay, one by one, to build it up.

It took many, many people and a lot of hard work over many years. They stacked the dirt so high that it became a giant platform. On top, they probably built wooden houses or important buildings.

It was like building a giant, flat-topped mountain just for them!

Monks Mound is about 100 feet tall. That's taller than a giraffe can reach with its long neck! It's also super wide and long, almost as long as three football fields put together. The bottom of the mound is as big as the bottom of the Great Pyramid in Egypt, which is a famous ancient building. This shows how amazing the people who built it were!

Monks Mound is special because it shows us how people lived a thousand years ago. It was a very important place for the Mississippian people. They gathered there for ceremonies or important meetings. It's like a giant ancient community center made of dirt! Scientists study it to learn about their lives and how they built such amazing things without modern tools.
