Who Wanted to Be Free?

Long ago, Mexico was ruled by Spain, a country far across the ocean. People born in Mexico, called 'criollos', felt like they weren't treated fairly. They wanted to make their own rules and choose their own leaders. This feeling grew and grew, like a tiny seed becoming a giant tree, until they decided to fight for their freedom!

The Spark That Started It All!

A brave priest named Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla lit the fire for freedom in 1810. He rang a church bell, calling people to arms. It was like a super important announcement that everyone had to hear! This moment, called the 'Grito de Dolores', was the beginning of a long and difficult war. Many brave people joined the fight, hoping for a better future for Mexico.

A Long Road to Freedom

The war wasn't quick like a race. It lasted for many, many years, from 1810 all the way to 1821! People fought bravely, but there were also sad times. Leaders like Hidalgo and José María Morelos y Pavón led the fight, but they were eventually captured. Still, the dream of freedom kept going, passed from one hero to another.

Mexico Becomes a Nation!

Finally, after 11 long years, Mexico won its independence! It was a huge celebration. The country was now free to make its own laws and be its own boss. This meant they could build their own schools, create their own art, and decide what was best for their land. It was a brand new beginning for Mexico!
