Mexico Wants to Be Free!

Long ago, Mexico was ruled by a faraway country called Spain. But the people of Mexico wanted to be in charge of their own land! They decided to fight for freedom. After a long struggle, Mexico became independent. But instead of choosing a president right away, they decided to have a king, or an emperor!

Meet Emperor Agustín I!

The person who helped Mexico become free was a brave soldier named Agustín de Iturbide. He was super popular! People loved him so much that they asked him to become Mexico's very first emperor. He agreed and was crowned Emperor Agustín I. He wore a fancy crown and ruled Mexico for a short time.

A Kingdom That Didn't Last Long

Being an emperor was a big job! Emperor Agustín I had to make big decisions, but not everyone agreed with him. Some people wanted Mexico to be run by elected leaders, like a president. There were arguments, and the country didn't have much money. It was like a playground disagreement that got too big.

Back to Being a Republic!

Because things got tricky, Emperor Agustín I decided to step down. He gave up his crown, and Mexico stopped being an empire. They decided to try a different way of ruling, which was a republic. This means they chose leaders by voting. The First Mexican Empire was over, but Mexico kept growing and changing!
