Meet the Giant Mountain!

Mauna Kea is a super-duper giant mountain on an island in Hawaii. It's a volcano, but don't worry, it's sleeping! Its name means 'White Mountain' because its top often gets covered in snow, like a yummy ice cream cone. It's so tall that its peak is the highest spot in all of Hawaii, even higher than a whole bunch of giraffes stacked on top of each other!

A Mountain's Long, Long Sleep

This giant mountain is really, really old, about a million years old! That's way older than your grandparents or even their grandparents. It used to be very active, like a bubbling soda bottle, but now it's mostly quiet and sleeping. The last time it grumbled and puffed out lava was a super long time ago, between 6,000 and 4,000 years ago. Now, it's just resting peacefully.

Why Mauna Kea is Super Special

Mauna Kea is special for a few reasons. First, it's incredibly tall, especially if you measure it from the very bottom on the ocean floor. It's even taller than Mount Everest, the world's tallest mountain above sea level! Also, its top is a perfect spot for looking at the stars because the air is clear and still, like a quiet classroom.

Giant Eyes in the Sky!

Because Mauna Kea's top is so high and clear, scientists built amazing giant telescopes there. These telescopes are like super-powered eyes that can see far, far away into space. They help scientists learn about stars, planets, and galaxies. It's like having the best seat in the house to watch the whole universe!
