Who Are the Kānaka Maoli?

Imagine sailing across a huge ocean on a canoe! That's how the first people, called Kānaka Maoli, arrived in Hawaii a super long time ago, at least 800 years ago. They came from other islands far away and made Hawaii their new home. They are the original people of these special islands, with their own unique ways of life, stories, and traditions. They are also known as Indigenous Hawaiians.

Sailing Superstars!

These early Hawaiians were incredible sailors! They used the stars and the ocean waves to guide their big canoes across the vast Pacific Ocean. They brought plants and animals with them to start new lives. Over time, they became so good at living in Hawaii that they developed their own special culture, different from where they came from, but still connected to other Polynesian people.

Living with Aloha

The Kānaka Maoli have a special way of living called 'Aloha'. It means love, peace, and kindness. Their traditions teach them to respect the land, the ocean, and each other. They have amazing stories and songs that have been passed down for many, many years. This connection to nature and community is super important to them.

A Kingdom is Born!

A long time ago, in 1795, a brave leader named Kamehameha the Great brought all the islands together to create the Hawaiian Kingdom. It was like uniting different playgrounds to make one big, amazing kingdom! Later, other islands joined too. People from all over the world came to visit and live there, bringing new ideas.
