Where Was This Giant Land?

The Oregon Territory was a super big place a long, long time ago. It was so big it included the places we now call Oregon, Washington, and Idaho! It even had a little bit of Wyoming and Montana. Think of it like a giant puzzle piece that got cut into smaller pieces later on. This land was mostly wild and full of nature, with forests and rivers waiting to be explored.

Who Lived There and When?

This special territory was around from 1848 to 1859. That's about as long as you've been alive, but for a whole country, it's not very long! Before it was a territory, different countries wanted to claim it. Eventually, the United States and the British Empire decided to share it. Then, the United States made it its own territory. It was a time of big changes for this amazing land.

What Was It Like to Live There?

Life in the Oregon Territory was very different from today. People had to build their own homes and find their own food. They traveled by horses or boats because there weren't many roads or cars.

The capital city, where the leaders worked, moved around a few times! It was first Oregon City, then Salem, then a town called Corvallis, and then back to Salem. Salem is still the capital of Oregon today!

Learning and Growing!

Even though it was a new territory, people knew that learning was important. They started schools so kids could read, write, and learn about the world. They wanted everyone to have a chance to get smart. Building schools helped the territory grow and become a stronger place. It shows that even in wild places, education was a big deal for the future.
