The Mahdist State was a religious and political movement that wanted to rule Sudan.

Who Were the Mahdists?

Once upon a time, in the land of Sudan, a man named Muhammad Ahmad declared he was a special messenger from God, called the Mahdi! He wanted to lead his people and create a new kind of government. This movement grew into something called the Mahdist State.

It was like a new country that started in 1881 and lasted for about 17 years. They wanted to rule Sudan themselves, away from the Egyptians and Turks who were in charge before.

The Big Fight for Freedom!

Muhammad Ahmad gathered many followers, called Ansar, who believed in him. They fought against the rulers in a city called Khartoum. It was a big struggle, like a really long game of tag!

The Mahdists were strong and eventually took over Khartoum. A famous leader named Charles Gordon was there, but sadly, he was killed during the fighting. After Muhammad Ahmad passed away, his friend Abdallahi ibn Muhammad took over and built the new Mahdist government.

Life in the Mahdist State

The Mahdists tried to run the country their own way, following their beliefs. They made new rules for everyone. But it wasn't easy. There was a lot of fighting, and sometimes not enough food, which made many people sick. The country's money and farms were hurt by all the problems. It was a very difficult time for many people living there.

A New Chapter Begins

After many years, other countries, like Britain and Egypt, came back and took control of Sudan. They ended the Mahdist State in 1898. Even though the main part of the Mahdist State was over, some of their followers kept going in a place called Darfur for a few more years. It shows how important their ideas were to some people!
