Key Facts
A Lake Like No Other!
Long, long ago, there was a huge, salty lake called Lake Texcoco. It was in a big valley in Mexico. This lake was special because it had islands in it. One of these islands was the perfect spot for a super important city to be built. Think of it like finding the best playground spot for your fort!
The Island City Adventure!
On one of the islands in Lake Texcoco, brave people called the Mexica built an amazing city named Tenochtitlan. It was like building a whole town on a giant lily pad! This city grew and grew and became the capital of a powerful empire. It was so big, it was like a whole city on water!
When the Water Went Away!
After some time, people decided they needed to build more on the land. So, they started draining the lake, letting the water go away. It was like emptying a giant bathtub! This made way for a new, big city to be built right where the lake used to be. But, taking away all the water changed things a lot.
What Happened Next?
When the lake disappeared, the land started to sink a little, like a sponge getting squeezed. Also, some cool animals that lived in the lake, like the axolotl (which looks like a funny little water dragon!), started to have trouble finding homes. It shows how important water is for everyone and everything!
