Irrawaddy Dolphin

Imagine a dolphin with a big, round head and a short beak, almost like a smile! That's the Irrawaddy dolphin. They are not like the dolphins you see leaping high in the ocean waves.

These special dolphins like to hang out near the coast, in big rivers, and even in lakes. They have smooth skin that's a pretty blue-gray color, like a stormy sky. They are super interesting because they can live in both salty ocean water and fresh river water!

Irrawaddy dolphins live in a few special places in Asia. You can find them in the Bay of Bengal, which is a big part of the ocean, and in Southeast Asia. Some of them even live in huge lakes like Chilika Lake in India and Songkhla Lake in Thailand.

These lakes are like giant swimming pools for them! They are not found everywhere, so these places are like their private playgrounds. It's amazing they can swim in both the sea and the rivers!

Did you know the Irrawaddy dolphin has a cousin? It's called the Australian snubfin dolphin. They look very much alike, and scientists only figured out they were different species a little while ago!

The Irrawaddy dolphin is about as long as a school bus, but much fatter. They are curious creatures and sometimes swim close to boats. They are also known for their unique way of swimming, often with just a little bit of their body showing above the water.
