Indo-Gangetic Plain

The Indo-Gangetic Plain is a HUGE, super-flat area in Asia, like a giant playground made of soft dirt! It's so big, it covers parts of India, Pakistan, Nepal, and Bangladesh. This amazing place is named after two giant rivers, the Indus and the Ganges, which flow through it. Think of it as a giant, fertile carpet that's perfect for growing yummy food and for lots of people to call home.

This giant flatland wasn't always here! It was made over a very, very long time by three super-powerful rivers: the Indus, the Ganges, and the Brahmaputra. These rivers carried tiny bits of rock and soil, called alluvium, all the way from the tall mountains.

They dropped this alluvium along their paths, building up the land layer by layer. It’s like the rivers were making a giant mud pie that grew and grew!

This plain is super special because it's incredibly fertile, meaning it's amazing for growing food! The soft, alluvium soil is like a super-food for plants. Plus, the rivers provide lots of water.

Because it's so good for farming and has plenty of water, it's one of the most crowded places on Earth. Many big cities are here, and nearly one out of every seven people in the whole world lives in or near this plain!

The Indo-Gangetic Plain is home to more people than almost anywhere else on Earth! It's like having a giant city that stretches for thousands of miles. Because the land is so good for growing food and there's plenty of water, people have lived here and farmed here for thousands of years. It’s a place where history and modern life mix, with busy cities and farms side-by-side.
