Key Facts
A Land Down Under!
Australia is a huge island continent way, way down south. In 1788, ships from Britain sailed for months to get there. They landed at a place called Port Jackson. This was the start of a new chapter for Australia, as people from far away began to build a new life on this amazing land.
Building a New Home
The first people to arrive were sent by the British King. They were called convicts, and they had to work hard to build houses and farms. It was tough at first, with not much food. But they kept going, and soon they were growing crops and catching fish to eat. It was like building a giant playground from scratch!
Meeting New Friends (and Not-So-Friends)
Long before the ships arrived, Aboriginal people had lived in Australia for thousands of years. They knew the land really well. When the new settlers came, it was a big change for everyone. Sometimes they got along, and sometimes there were problems because they had different ideas about the land.
Growing and Changing
More and more people came to Australia, not just convicts, but also people looking for new opportunities. They started new towns and explored further inland. Australia was growing and changing fast, becoming a place with many different kinds of people and new ways of living.
