Gerónimo de Aguilar

Gerónimo de Aguilar was a kind man from Spain who wanted to help people in new lands. He was a friar, which means he was part of a religious group that traveled to teach and help others. He was born a long, long time ago, in a town called Écija. He was sent on a big adventure to a place called Panama, but his ship got lost!

One day, Gerónimo's ship crashed near a place called the Yucatán Peninsula. It was like being lost on a desert island! The people who lived there were called the Maya. Years later, a famous explorer named Hernán Cortés found Gerónimo. Cortés was very happy to find someone who could speak the Maya language! Gerónimo became his special translator. This meant he could talk to the Maya people and tell Cortés what they said, and tell the Maya what Cortés wanted. It was a very important job!
