Where Did They Hide?

Free France wasn't a place on a map like France is today. It was a group of brave French people who had to leave their homes when Germany took over France during World War II. They set up their 'government' in London, England, which is across the sea from France. Think of it like a team playing a game in another country because their home field was taken over!

The Brave Leader!

The leader of Free France was a very determined man named General Charles de Gaulle. He didn't want France to give up! He made a famous speech from London, asking all French people to keep fighting. He was like the captain of a ship, guiding his crew from a safe harbor when the seas got rough. His voice was broadcast on the radio, reaching people all over.

Fighting from Afar!

Even though they were far away, the Free French Forces fought in many important battles. They helped the Allies, which were the countries fighting against Germany. They even had their own navy and air force! Some Free French soldiers fought alongside British and Canadian soldiers. They were like a special team helping out in a giant, worldwide game.

Coming Home!

After a long and hard fight, the Free French helped to win the war and get France back! They moved their government from London to a city called Algiers in Africa, and then finally back to France. It was a huge victory, and it showed that even when things seem darkest, brave people can make a big difference.
