Jerusalem During the First Crusade-ar

Key Facts
Knights on a Big Quest!
A long, long time ago, in Europe, people heard about a special city called Jerusalem. It was a very important place for Christians, but people called Muslims had taken control of it. Some leaders, like the Pope, asked brave knights and regular people to go on a big journey, like a super long camping trip, to get Jerusalem back for Christians.
This big trip was called the First Crusade, and it happened between 1096 and 1099. It was like a giant mission to a faraway land!
Who Went on the Adventure?
First, a huge group of ordinary people, led by a man named Peter the Hermit, set off. They were super excited but didn't have much training. Sadly, they got into trouble and didn't make it very far.
Then, the real adventure began with the 'Princes Crusade.' Rich and powerful leaders, like knights and dukes, gathered their own armies. Imagine thousands of soldiers, more than fill a whole school bus, traveling together across mountains and seas!
Battles and Big Wins!
These brave travelers faced many challenges. They had to march through tough lands and fight battles. They fought against skilled Turkish archers who were super fast on their horses.
One big battle happened near a city called Nicaea, where the crusaders won! They also fought a long fight to capture a city called Antioch. Finally, after a long journey, they reached Jerusalem.
They fought hard and, in 1099, they captured the city!
What Happened Next?
After winning Jerusalem, the crusaders set up their own little kingdoms in the land. They were called Crusader states. Most of the knights and soldiers then went back home to Europe, feeling proud of their amazing journey.
The First Crusade was the most successful of many crusades that happened over the years. It showed how determined people could be to reach their goals, even if it meant a very long and dangerous trip!
